You've probably encountered tire size numbers before, especially if you've priced them yourself when shopping for new tires, but what exactly do those numbers mean?

American tires use a standard code that tells us a number of things about a tire's size. Passenger car tires all begin with "P," while a light truck tire will start with "LT." The next number is the tire's tread width in millimeters. The third item is the aspect ratio, which is the ratio of the tire's height to its width. An "R" stands for radial construction, and the number afterwards is the wheel size of the tire in inches. A speed rating is expressed as a letter and represents the maximum speed the tire is designed to go.
